Frank G. Craig
(1916 - 1997)

Frank Garnett Craig Jr. was born in a snowbank on March 2, 1916, in Shipman, Virginia. He moved to the San Francisco Bay area at the age of 16 during the Great Depression and began his lifelong career as an artist by painting the North tower of the Golden Gate Bridge while it was under construction. His only formal training came at the age of forty at the California School for Fine Arts where he studied for a year.

In the 1960’s Frank lived and worked in Cannery Row (made famous by writer and friend, John Steinbeck). Craig also enjoyed photography and studied at Monterey College under Roger Fremier. His good friend, Ansel Adams also encouraged Frank who was fascinated with capturing the contrasts of light and shadows on film. In 1970 he moved his family to La Conner, Washington where he would display his watercolors, clothes-pinned to the fence outside the studio! In the 10 years he lived in La Conner he had access to a potter’s wheel and kiln and produced a variety of beautiful, functional, and fanciful ceramic works. He later moved back to the Monterey peninsula in 1980, continuing his career in art until his death in 1997. Frank Craig’s distinctive style of quick, spontaneous brushstrokes depicting the life and landscapes around him grace many collections from America to Japan.
